End of an Era

Jun 23 2011

The overpass is coming down.  In fact, according to CBC it came down today.  Apparently, it’s being rebuilt bigger and better allowing more people and cars to simultaneously pass under it and over it.

So, until it’s rebuilt, the line defining “town” and the rest of the island is blurred.  The overpass has long been the de facto standard definition for the line that separates St. John’s from the rest of the province.  Folks on one side are townies and folks on the other side are baymen.

They’d better get it finished before university starts in the fall or there’s gonna be a shitload of confused students roaming around campus, not entirely sure what to call themselves.  Who’s a townie?  Who’s a bayman?  NO ONE’S GONNA KNOW!!!

RoD, Chalker Place

Feb 04 2011

One of my favourite shows on TV these days is Republic of Doyle.  I really enjoy the aerial views of St. John’s, the glimpses of people I know cast as extras (yeah that’s you, Morgan and Jeannine!), and appearances of Newfoundland talent (Gordon Pinsent, Seamus O’Regan, Mary Walsh, Alan Doyle, Pete Soucy, etc).  One of the things I like the most is trying to figure out the location of the scenes as Jake Doyle tries to solve crimes and mysteries in and around my hometown.

Tonight, as we watched last night’s episode on our PVR, my wife and I thought we saw an area of town we recognized.  It’s Buckmaster’s circle… no, it’s Grave’s Street… wait… is it Chalker Place?  Hey, that place looks familiar!  Pause, rewind.  It IS Chalker Place and that’s the house I lived in for 7 years!  Sure, it’s got new siding and the area’s been fixed up and updated, but that’s definitely my old house at 47 Chalker Place!

Oh Yeah!

Igor!

Sep 21 2010

Newfoundland is getting pounded by hurricane Igor today.

Video my son took from his room on campus at MUN.

There are hundreds of pics online showing the extensive damage.  I was in Newfoundland for the past week and was supposed to fly out today.  Luckily, I was able to change my flight and get out last night.

Chill Out!

Jul 08 2010

One major difference between the seasons in Moncton and the seasons in Sin Jahn’s are exactly that… the seasons.  Moncton has some clear definition between all four seasons: cold, snowy winters; wet, growth-filled springs; hot-as-love summers; and chilly, windy autumns.

St. John’s has two seasons… cold rain, drizzle and fog and VERY cold rain drizzle and fog.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the town.  However, Wikipedia confirms the dreariness of the climate realities in my fair hometown.

In my post earlier this week, I “complained” about the heat and Phil from Mud Songs suggested that moving to St. John’s would help.  Wonderful idea, but I decided to install air conditioners instead.  So, with some help from my darling wife, we managed to get the A/Cs installed in the bedrooms and the whole family has been sleeping comfortably ever since!

We are such a spoiled species.
