Frisbee Inventor Dies at 90

Feb 12 2010

According to CBC.ca, Walter Fredrick Morrison, the man accredited with inventing the Frisbee has died at age 90.

In honour of him, or more honestly an excuse to push a post up on my blog, I’ll share with you a quote from a very funny Canadian, Stewart Francis.

Goodbye Walter, and thanks Stewart!

Rum and Coke?

Feb 11 2010

rum and coke2 A priest was seated next to a Newfoundlander on a flight to St. John’s.  After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken.  The Newfoundlander asked for a rum and coke, which was brought and placed before him.

Then the flight attendant asked the priest if he would like drink as well.  Disgusted, he replied, “I’d rather be savagely raped by a dozen whores than let liquor touch my lips!”

The Newfoundlander quickly passed his drink back to the attendant, “Me too, me darlin’, I didn’t know we had a choice.”

(Thanks Donna!)

A Special Anniversary

Feb 09 2010

Thirty three years ago today, my wife, then a young teenager, had a brain tumor removed at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

She had been experiencing some pretty severe headaches, blackouts and dizzy spells.  When she went to the doctor and they discovered what it was, they quickly decided that she must have it removed.  Within days, she was on a plane and on her way to an operation that was far from routine and quite likely could have taken her life.  While she was being operated on, her grandmother, still back in Newfoundland, passed away unexpectedly.  I can’t even begin to imagine the mix of emotions that her father must have been feeling at that time.  At the end of what had to have been a very stressful week, getting both the news of a successful brain surgery of his daughter and hearing that his mother had passed away.  That kind emotional tug of war could have easily cracked a weaker man.

The family firmly believes that the grandmother, from afar, gave her life to save her granddaughter’s.  It’s almost too coincidental not to be true or connected in some way.

I, for one, am grateful to her doctors for their judgment, skill, and steady hands.  I am also grateful to her grandmother for taking Donna’s spot in line and allowing the life our son and I enjoy today.  I can’t even begin to imagine how different my life would be without her in my life.

Happy “Anniversary”, my love.  I’m glad you could be here to share it with me.

Smile! No, Wait. Is this thing on?

Feb 07 2010

Ever get ready to snap a photo of that special moment only to discover that the camera is set to “video” mode?

Well, today I was cleaning up my video folders and found that over the course of eight or nine years of digital picture taking it appears we’ve amassed our fair share of these little time capsules.  Those two second videos are sometimes more amusing and memory provoking than the pictures they were intended to be.  Check out the montage below for a taste.

It’s all “location” humour, meaning you had to have been there.  But you might get a little chuckle anyway.
