Y’all Come Back Now, Y’Hear?

Apr 02 2009

yallThat’s really the point of this blogging thing, isn’t it? If I wasn’t writing something here now and then, ye wouldn’t be all that anxious to be coming back. And if you lot weren’t out there to read my drivel, I wouldn’t be all that motivated to write this stuff for youse.

You. It’s a simple word that becomes a little awkward for some of us when we want to use it in the plural. Y’all, ye, you lot, yous, you guys, yis… the list goes on. Most Newfoundlanders use the word “ye” to indicate the plural “you”, and I’ve noticed that Cape Bretoners often use “yez”, kind of a variation of “youse”.

What do y’all say for “y’all”?

Y’all… that brings back a lot of Southern memories. When I was working in Altanta for 14 months, I heard it constantly… and for many months after leaving Altanta I continued using it myself. Now all I say is… Ye!

i hear “youse” mentioned many times. just recently as we were walking home from the shop with a 24 under our arms, a mountie came by and said,”where youse goin with dat?” we replied,”we’s gettin drunk” followed by “youse better behave.” it’s a common word.

With my friends I use “you fuckers”. For example, “what are you fuckers doing on the weekend?” With people who aren’t my friends and are therefore my enemies, I use “you guys”. I live in opposite land.
