Last year, I published a list of resolutions as long as the word “resolution”. Aside from purging clutter in the storage corners of my house (resulting in creating a vacuum which simply attracts more clutter), I’ve not accomplished any of them. Having several goals in mind hoping I’d accomplish at least one of them was obviously not a very good strategy for me.
So… this year, I’m choosing one of those goals and I’m gonna give it the gusto. Since it’s already January 6th and resolutions normally start on January 1st, I think it’s futile to attempt to resolve against my procrastination issue. I think I’ll leave that until next year. (Did you get that? Procrastination… wait until next year? Funny, eh?) Obviously, I’m not giving up making stupid jokes.
Nope… this year I’m going to try to tackle my weight again. This time last year, I announced to the world my weight was 230+ pounds. Well, I’m still there. Twohundredandthirtyfourfuckingpounds to be exact. My list has been reduced to one. Perhaps now I can focus and succeed. You think?

New Years Resolutions is a phrase made up by a woman who thought it her responsibilty to make any or all changes in the life of her somewhat significant,. . . lets make that mentionable other.
Here are a few goals that I would like to achieve but somehow it seems doubtless.
1. Reduce the number of times the couch and I are on a first name basis during the year. Too much to ask for? You may be right.
2. Having the wifey agree with me and telling me “I’m right” Too much again, huh?
3. Increase my statis in the food chain. Wife – kids – pets – game shows – me, I think
By the way . . .is “Happily Married” an oxymoron

Steve, good on ya for trying to focus on a goal such as better health. A little patience will go a long way. Make some small, manageable changes. If I may be so bold as to offer a few:
1) Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
2) Replace soft-drinks with water.
3) When you feel hungry, drink a large glass of water instead of snacking. If you’re still hungry 20 minutes later, eat.
4) Try to add a few healthier snacks to your diet, like apples, oranges, carrots, bananas, or whatever fruits and veggies you like. (It’s easier to focus on adding healthy stuff than removing unhealthy stuff.)
Good luck!

Kevin… thanks for that. Knowing someone else is up against greater odds than I am in my resolution is very motivating indeed!
Ian… 1: yes, unless it’s a lot of stairs. 2: I don’t THINK so! 3: Yes, for sure. 4: I’m starting that. It actually feels good to eat right… I haven’t lost any weight yet, really, but I’m feeling remarkably refreshed after only three days of not filling my pie hole with garbage.

Good for you on the New Year Reso! I am on Team Steve!!!
My resolutions this year are
1) Quit smoking (I am getting help for this on tomorrow)
2) Start going to the gym (Which I am taking up in February since I will be taking over my brothers membership)
3) To keep my mouth shut (for the most) when people do things that irk me
5) Maintain a 3.5+ GPA

So far, 6.5 pounds and still religiously following my diet plan. Only cheated once…

First of all to Ian
This sounds like a woman’s approach to me, could this person be an impersonator of the female persuasion
Secondly, Melissa
The idea that she’s getting help is encouraging
The concept of going to the Gym is a start. When you get there, get out of the car and go in and start exercising
Ditto on Number 3

“get out of the car and go in and start exercising”… That’s what I was doing wrong!

If you keep updating this site with progress you may get a cheering/jeering section and it could be a bit more motivation since it’s public.
6.5lbs in a week? That’s a lot. Hopefully you WON’T keep up that pace or you’ll have to start supplementing iron.

Actually… it’s technically not a week. I weighed myself on Jan 2 at 234 pounds. When I officially started my healthy eating plan on Monday, I weight 230.5 pounds. A week later I was 227.5 pounds.

2-3 pounds per week is a nice, healthy rate of weight loss. Losing weight too quickly can cause other issues, as Pender points out, and also increases the likelihood of gaining it back. Slow and steady wins the race! I agree also that keeping it public helps keep you accountable. We’re watching you!!

I know nothing about weight-loss, but 2+ pounds a week seems like a lot.
I’ve been the same weight since I was 18 – around 150 lbs, but my cholesterol is probably through the roof and cancer is likely snaking through my veins, which reminds me: I’m at that age for an annual finger-up-the-arse checkup, which I’ve never experienced, thank you very much.

Good on ya mate! I ballooned back up over 250lbs again this year, and it’s a total bummer. Quit smoking 2 years ago, and was a somewhat healthy 215lbs. And here I am feeling more unhealthy than I did when I was smoking. Go figure… biggest problem now is getting my lazy ass to do some sort of regular workout regime… hate going to the gym and don’t see myself back doing that again… although it really does work for me when I stick to it. Have started Broomball, and that’s an amazing cardio workout twice per week, so we’ll see if I can throw in a few more good things and cut back on the late night snacking! Ah screw that, got a smoke??

Last week I was down another three pounds, but after a very social weekend, I’m back up 1 pound. Still doing well!

The year is halfway through, Steve; I think it’s time for an accountability update on your resolution!

Hmmmm… thanks Ian, for making me accountable. I was doing really well for a while. I was down almost 20 pounds… to 217. Around late March, early April I fell off the wagon for a week, then two, then three. I got back up to 235. About six weeks ago I started to reduce the amount I eat… being careful, but not dieting. I’m down to 225 again. I’m hoping to be under 220 by the time vacation (end of August) rolls around.

Cool, we’re almost the same weight now! Not the same type of weight, but the same amount of gravitational force is being exerted on us both and that’s possibly the mainish thing!
