He Never Knew What Hit Him

Aug 22 2009

Bumbling-beeSaturday morning. I kind of enjoy it when I’m up earlier than the others. Brew a pot of coffee, toast a couple (4) of slices of raisin bread and sit out on the back deck. There’s a gentle, warm breeze and the soothing sounds of other people working on their lawns.

I’m sitting here in my screened gazebo enjoying this little piece of heaven. One side of the gazebo is open, the screen is most useful in the evenings to keep out the moths and the mosquitoes. Enter stage left… one bumble bee the size of a small hummingbird. This thing was freakin’ HUGE! I stealthily slither toward the screen door where we have a fly swatter handy for such occasions. As I tip toe over toward the buzzing intruder he sees me. In an instant he is turned around and flying full throttle toward me. I swing the swatter and BAM! Home run! The little shagger is over at the other end of my deck, missing a leg and sporting a twisted wing and probably one hell of a headache. There he was bumbling about trying to recover and trying for all his might to sting whatever he came in contact with. Go ahead you little frigger… thrust your stinger all you want, you won’t be stinging nobody today. Squish!

Chicken Salad – Four Years Ago

Aug 21 2009

Chicken Salad, November 2005So. I’m standing up at the office chatting away with someone and I absentmindedly put my hand into my back pocket. There’s a piece of paper in there. I pull it out and glance at it while we are talking. It is a receipt from Sobey’s supermarket in Highfield Square, downtown Moncton, from four years ago! November 23rd, 2005 to be exact.

I must have gone there for my lunch. It was 1:25 pm and I bought 3 diet Pepsi and a chicken salad with ranch dressing. $9.96. I gave the cashier, S. Lane, 10 bucks and got 4 cents change. My healthy lifestyle (ahem) must be working because I still fit into a pair of jeans I haven’t worn in almost four years.

The supermarket is gone now, but its memory lives on in my denim clad, back pocket time capsule.

By they way, I was blogging back then. Here’s a post I put up three days before that chicken salad was doomed to dissolve in my digestive tract. The post is kind of cryptic, but anyone who knows anything about my working conditions back then is fully aware of the source of my near psychopathic meltdown.

You Can Leave Your Hat On

Aug 19 2009

Oh Me Hat!Anyone who has been following my meandering muses here at OhMeNerves.com knows that after a period of sporadic or non-existing posts comes the obligatory post falling under the category of writer’s block. That post usually contains a bunch of shtuff that could arguably be a virtual cesspool of blog posting inspiration leaving you, my faithful reader(s) wondering why I’ve abandoned you for so long.

Well, I hate to disappoint so this post will be no different.

Our summer here in Atlantic Canada has been a pretty shitty one so far. Through to the end of July it’s been mostly miserable, wet, and unseasonably cool. To make the weather even more unbearable, the nice days we did have were coincidental to days that our son had to work. So our weeks consisted of a sentence of rain, drizzle and fog punctuated with a lot of complaining from our offspring. Then August came. The first week was a little cool, but since then someone turned up the furnace. It’s been hot as a one night stand for two solid weeks now, and it hasn’t been a dry heat either. As everyone knows, it’s not the heat, it’s the stupidity. I was stupid enough to think we could get by without installing our air conditioners. It was fine for a while, but now… boy oh boy. Now I’m saying it’s not reasonable to put them up if we are starting vacation in a week or so anyway.

Speaking of segues, our vacation is a little late this year. We normally go during the first two weeks of August. But this year we are going during the first two weeks of September because our son is off to Memorial University in St. John’s. So we postponed our vacation by a month to bring him off to the gates of adulthood and help ready him for a year without dear old Mom and Dad.

The funny thing about segues is that Jody over at SteelWhiteTable.org also took his vacation in Newfoundland this year. While he was there he came across a souvenir that reminded him of me. Check out the hat in the picture… “Oh Me Nerves!” I don’t get it, but you never know what triggers an associational thought. I’m grateful Jody. Believe it or not, I don’t already have one, but I do have a couple of coffee mugs with that phrase on it and I have another friend that went to Newfoundland and bought a T-Shirt (for herself! Thanks Chrissy!) with that same phrase on it.

Our next-door neighbours moved out after nine years of putting up with sharing a wall with us. They decided that they would move all the way across town and change their phone number, names, and license plate. When they settled in, they immediately went on vacation at the opposite end of the country. I’m doing my best not to take it personally, although I have invested in Costco quantities of deodorant and breath mints just in case.

I played in a pool league this summer too. Played very well, my best season ever. We are in the midst of playoffs now… we’ll see if I manage to fall short of the championship (again).

Besides all that, we’ve spent a fair amount of time riding our four-wheelers, sitting on our asses, walking, eating like seagulls, dieting and generally being pissed off with enjoying each other’s company.

Now, as I look at the calendar, I can see that we have eight more sleeps before we leave to make the 2000 kilometer journey to our home town and the place where we will say “so long” to our son as he starts his own journey through the ranks of higher education and, hopefully, a full and prosperous life. Eight more sleeps.

Lard Tunderin’!

Aug 07 2009

Thunder SkiesTonight we had quite a little thunderstorm here in the greater Moncton area.

Soaked from T-StormDonna and I decided we were heading to Costco and the skies looked a little ominous. While we were in Costco the storm hit. You could hear the rain and hail pound on the metal roof of the building. As we headed toward the checkouts, Donna asked if I would go get the vehicle and bring it closer to the door. I headed toward the door and had to force my way past all the other customers who wouldn’t even step outside. “What are you all made of? Sugar? What’s a little rain?” Well, I stepped outside and got pummeled by rain drops the size of my fists. I ran to our vehicle only to discover I was not only at the wrong vehicle, I was past my ankles in water. Thunderstorm HailWhen I finally got to our vehicle I was soaked completely to the skin. I was outside maybe 30 seconds.

When we got home we discovered quite an accumulation of pea-sized hailstones all over our deck. No damage, but pretty cool to see.

We spent the next couple of hours playing cards and listening to thunder.

Loooong Weekend

Aug 03 2009

What a weekend! Today (Monday) was a provincial holiday (New Brunswick Day) and as such a day off work. I decided to take last Friday off as a vacation day giving me a long, loooong weekend.

Friday was a day for chores. I had been putting off staining the deck boards out back all summer. I got up early to beat the sun and stay in the shade as I worked around the deck with the stain. Friday afternoon: Grocery shopping.

But Saturday is when the fun started. Up early and off to Petitcodiac for a run on the four-wheelers. It was a run organized by a local ATV club. Roughly 65 machines hit the 115 km ride, weaving through the trees and tearing up the mud. We always enjoy four-wheeling regardless of the weather or the location. We got back and cleaned up by about 7:30 at night. Donna was passed out on the couch and I was passed out in the chair when my phone rang with an invitation to go playing pool with a couple of buddies. Up and out the door to play pool, returning just before 1 am.

Trip to St. MartinsSunday morning we got a call from some other friends asking if we were interested in going for a drive, a hike and a picnic down around St. Martins. We hadn’t been to St. Martins in several years. What used to be an interesting beach with shorelines eroded by millenniums of the world’s highest tides is now a beautiful groomed hiking park on the Bay of Fundy coast. It was mostly driving, a fair amount of eating, and just a little bit of hiking, but a wonderful day. We topped it off with a fattening meal at the Irving Big Stop Restaurant in Salisbury, an over-sized ice cream cone from Kings Cones and a cold drink of rum in the screened gazebo on our back deck. Another day full from start to finish.

Monday… totally vegged out and did nothing. I think I’ll sleep well tonight.

That’s it. Our weekend in a nutshell. Click the picture for more photos of our hike in St. Martins.

P.S. Happy Birthday Sharon. Happy Birthday Uncle Pat.
