With all the options available to us today to keep in touch with what’s going on around the world, you would think it would be easier to keep up with what’s going on around the world, eh? Besides newspapers, there’s 24/7 news channels on TV, internet, news readers, radio, podcasts and the list goes on.
My preferred method is reading the news headlines on my RSS reader either on my computer desktop or my iPhone. I subscribe to several CBC feeds; one each for Canada, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, World, Arts and Recalls. I can usually whiz through the headlines and only drill into the news stories that pique my interest. Sounds efficient eh? Apparently not. I’m about a week and a half behind right now. My life is so busy right now (but who’s isn’t?) and for some reason I can’t stop long enough to see what’s up with the world.
So what did I miss? Here’s a sampling of the most interesting stuff from about a week and a half ago that I would have known much earlier if I was current on my current events:
Newfoundland: Minor Earthquake Rocks Eastern Newfoundland. A 3.3 magnitude earthquake hit the area that my parents live in. Neither of them felt a thing.
New Brunswick: Mexican Tourist Fears Swine Flu May Stop Him From Leaving Fredericton. Is this really news? C’mon. In related news though, folks in the U.S. thought that pigs would fly before a black man would become president. They were almost right. 100 days into Obama’s presidency – swine flu. (Thanks Kevin!)
Canada: Halifax Public Gardens A No Feeding Zone For Ducks. Halifax city council has made it illegal to feed the ducks or pigeons in 50 various locations around the city. I have a picture of me from about 20 years ago, surrounded by ducks in Halifax Public Gardens. I hope the law is not retroactive!
World: You’ve Got Mail… From The Queen. A Quebec teenager was among two Canadians to receive the Queens first email correspondence. It’s only a matter of time before she asks the teenager to send her 2 thousand dollars so she can free her inheritance up from the frozen accounts in some Nigerian bank.
Arts: Comic Actor Dom DeLuise Dies At 75. Sad news. I was always a fan…
Recalls: Same old same old. If it isn’t listeria, it’s choking hazards or lead. I should drop this RSS feed.
Except for the earthquake thingy, I don’t think I missed much worth talking about.
