ZYX – Backing Talkwards

Mar 31 2009

random-lettersMy buddies at SWT just finished up a month of posts starting with the letters of the alphabet, in sequential order. I thought it was a pretty neat idea and thought I might try it myself. It must have been quite a challenge, because as the month wore on, they found it ever more difficult to find subjects for their posts. The toughest letters are the ones at the end of the alphabet. I made the mistake of offering a “hey, you shoulda done this” comment and Phillip delegated the final letter to me. Here’s what I came up with… a silly zed-infested string of nonsensical sentences depicting a late night snack of someone stirred from their slumber.

The alphabet theme was such a good idea, I think I’ll try it. I won’t steal their idea directly though… I’ll start with Z and work my way backwards down to A. Stay tuned during the month of April (shit, if I started with A then April Fool’s Day could have been my first post!)

12 or 13…

Mar 25 2009

12or13… the name of my last post? (Go ahead, check it out.)
… the number of days since my last post? (About average lately, actually.)
… the number of posts in my backyard fence? (Just a guess.)
… the number of backyards I can see from my backyard? (Another guess.)
… the number of weeks since I started my diet? (… not many more pounds than that as well.)
… the age will guarantee you 5 to 10? (Where did that come from?)
… the total hours sleep I got last weekend? (Directly correlated to the number of hours I spent painting the kitchen.)
… the number of months that have at least 29 days in them? (Made you think twice on that one, right?)
… the seating capacity at the table for the Last Supper? (Always room for one more!)
… the times my wife has told me she likes that Cheerios “It says ‘Shut up, Steve’” commercial? (Seems like a lot more, actually.)
… the amount of snow, in inches, of our worst storm this winter season, so far? (Not too bad, but we had a lot of them.)
… the number of items you can expect when you order a dozen of something at a bakery? (Baker’s dozen? Get it?)
… the number of questions in this blog post? (Thought you’d never ask.)

12 or 13?

Mar 13 2009

This will drive you nuts, if you let it. Count the people in the drawing, wait for the image to change, then count them again.

12-or-13

Thanks Cindy!

When I’m Up I Can’t Get Down

Mar 12 2009

l-640-480-2a1437b3-02fc-4a52-8383-2a1941ddb697.jpegGreat Big Sea. Great Big Show.

Went to my first concert in years last night. The Newfoundland super group Great Big Sea was in Moncton. I could go on about how great the show was and how Alan Doyle, the lead singer coerced the audience to their feet from the third song through to the end of the concert. But anyone who knows the band knows that a singing, bouncing, clapping crowd is par for the course with this awesome stage band, so I won’t waste your time by saying it needlessly here.

What I didn’t know before, was that the band has been together for 16 years. In fact, the concert date (March 11, 2009) was the 16th anniversary of their inaugural gig held at Memorial University in St. John’s. Great Big Show!!!

Elsewhere last night, in my absence, my recreational pool league team clinched first place in regular season play with two weeks yet to play. As captain of that team I’m proud that my truancy assisted them secure that distinction for us. I couldn’t be happier! Good job guys!

Oh, almost forgot. My big bro turned 46 yesterday too. Happy Belated Birthday Bill.

All in all, a Great Big Day.

Television Habits

Mar 10 2009

Television is the great babysitter for many. For me, I never know what shows to latch on to. Right now, among other special interest shows, my wife and I regularly watch “House”. We started five years late and are catching up via our handy dandy PVR.

Any suggestions for other shows?

Winter Blues And Writer’s Block

Mar 09 2009

typewriterLast year around this time I was getting pissed off at old man winter. This year is no different, except I think we are suffering the symptoms of the season a little more harshly than average. This winter in the Moncton region has been a little more snow, rainy and cold than it has been most of the years we’ve lived here. So, here we are now, approaching the middle of March and I find myself counting the days to some unknown date down the road when I can start feeling the chill leaving the air and the seeing the tulips poke out of the frosted ground. We just went through springing the clocks ahead for Daylight Savings time, so maybe the perception of longer days will spring me back to life before I start seeing leaf buds and cherry blossoms.

…and maybe, I’ll get over this freaking writer’s block. I’ve found it ever increasingly difficult to get the gumption to post anything meaningful up here. Even the meaningless trivia that comes my way seems to be more effort than it’s worth to me lately. And it’s not that I haven’t had some interesting stuff happening that I could share with y’all. I’ve recently done some traveling and started a new job. Friends and family have visited, friends and family have had birthdays, pictures have been taken, toys have been purchased. The news is full of wild and weird shit. Elections have been won and lost, controversy has controverted, souffles have fallen.

So… what’s wrong with me. Perhaps the sun’s new found strength bolstered by the increasing daylight hours will awaken me to a renewed spirit of creativity. Maybe I’ll be inspired by the inevitable growth of my annual spring cleaning Honey-Do list and find escape from the labour in clacking of my keyboard.

A quick check of my visitor count in the sidebar shows that I’ve recently surpassed 30,000 hits on this site. Not earth shattering by internet standards, but certainly enough to show me that a few of you are interested or at least curious. Even if that interest is likened to the rubbernecking of drivers slowing their vehicles to a crawl to gawk at the carnage of a highway pileup, I must find the strength to forge on and create.

All right folks. A hundred miles an hour on a slippery road it is. I’ll defeat this writer’s block and give you something to read more often. Or maybe… just maybe, I’ll write about the same topic, three weeks from now. At least it will be spring by then.
