Oh Me Legs!
Curling is a team sport played on ice. The Olympic medal sport originated in the 1500’s on the lakes and ponds of Northern Europe. The object of the game is for two teams of four players to slide 42-pound granite rocks down a sheet of ice 130 feet long by 15 feet wide. The rocks are delivered toward the center of a 12-foot diameter target similar to an archery target. The targets are painted into the ice just below the surface at both ends of the sheet of ice, to allow the game to be played back and forth, usually eight or ten times.
I stole the above paragraph from the introduction section of CurlTech, a curling school website because my legs are too sore to write something original. Seriously.
On Friday night, I played the game for the first time. The social committee at work organized it and we figured it might be a nice night out of the house. It wasn’t serious play, really. We played three different teams, each game was limited to 45 minutes with beer and pizza served during the night. We actually only played a total of 8 ends because time ran out. So, in total, I threw 16 rocks and did some sweeping for my teammates. I actually had a great time and thought I did half decent for my first time out.
My first time is probably my last time. When I got up on Saturday morning, I couldn’t move my legs. I have never, never been so sore. For the life of me, I don’t understand how walking back and forth the ice a few times and sliding a couple of stones around would make my upper thighs so stiff and sore I find it near impossible to descend a set of stairs or lower myself to a toilet.
Go ahead, laugh. But it ain’t funny.

I thought that curling was a drinking game? The whole point was to drink your face off and laugh at everybody (yourself included).
Actually if you are sore it is probably from simply being on the ice. As noobie you are probably scared that you are going to fall. So, like an old(er), fearful man you are tensing every muscle in your body, trying to make sure that you do not make even the preliminary moves that would make you horizontal and the brunt of jokes. Which is what confuses me because you and I both know who the brunt of the most jokes is
That being said, yes I have curled before ;-P

Starting to feel a little better. Stairs still scare me though.

I played two soccer games yesterday taking 1 sub every half. I landed on my hip and that is sore, but the legs are ok and just feeling a little fatigued.
Man Steve, you must be turning into a coach potato or just a regular old desk jockey.

Yeah…maybe there’s a little of that. But some people have been saying that I overused my “stabilizer” muscles from simply being on ice for three hours.

I know how you feel, I did that for a few years back. Not only was I sore the next day, and worse the day after that, but I was black and blue from the waist down.

Listen to the people who said stabilizer muscles. One thing I’ve learned from winter running this year is that it takes for more muscle control to run on ice and snow than on clear dry ground.
Hopefully you try curling again, it’s a fun sport! Not that I ever play any more than you do, but I do enjoy watching it.

I enjoy watching it too, but watching never made me this sore.

Haha, I get that for 4 days of every week, after a leg workout. I hobble around like an 80 year old man. I can barely go up and downstairs and every step necessitates a grunt. It’s a good thing the sink and bathtub are next to the toilet in my house and that there’s an oh me jesus handle in the bathrooms at work.
I had a leg workout last night, so I know what you’re going through.
