The Biggest City In Newfoundland

Mar 11 2008

The question, Alex, is “What is St. John’s”.

That, of course, would be the answer if you were a contestant on Jeopardy. However, if you were giving the punchline to a joke, the answer would be Fort McMurray. With the outward migration to the boomtown oil fields of Alberta, this is an emotional reality to many Newfoundland families. I was reminded of this fact as I read my CBC.ca news feeds today. I get several feeds from CBC: a national feed, a New Brunswick feed, and a Newfoundland feed. I found it very interesting to see the following headline on my Newfoundland feed.

This headline wasn’t on my New Brunswick feed nor was it on my Canadian national feed. It turns out that this is becoming a problem as Newfoundlanders are coaxing their elderly parents to come join them in their new homes out west. “Why are you here all alone, Mom, with all of those expenses? Why don’t you come to Fort McMurray and live with us?”

Let’s hope that the soon-to-be-booming Newfoundland economy will support an eastward migrating repatriation. I wouldn’t be heartbroken if my family and I went along for the ride.

Winter Schminter

Mar 06 2008

Someone out there has the same attitude toward winter as I do. However, they seem to be much more creative in their expressive abilities.

Go Away Winter

Thanks Deb!

Random Theft

Mar 05 2008

I stole an idea from my thief.gifbuddies over at Steel White Table. After playing around with changing their taglines (the text underneath the blog title) with suggestions from their readers, they decided to implement a random tagline on their site.

I liked the idea enough to implement my own version, with random Newfoundland sayings.

I’ve always had a random photo appear in the upper left of my pages. Now I’ve implemented a random font for my blog title along with implementing SWT’s idea of a random tagline.

What do you think? You like it? Got any Newfoundland phrases I can add to my list?

Separation Anxiety

Mar 02 2008

Our son left today for a school trip to Europe. My heart is racing out of excitement and envy of what is sure to be a trip of a lifetime for many of these kids, particularly our son. The 50 or so kids along with 10 or so chaperones all gathered at the school at 5:00 pm, where they would file onto buses for the 2.5 hour drive to Halifax airport. We arrived at the school around 4:30 and left him at about 5:30, waiting for the buses to arrive. Their flight was supposed to be leaving at 11:45 pm tonight, right about the time I am writing this post.

Well, we got a call around 8:30 this evening from our son and he told us that they had just left the school! What?!? 8:30 plus 2.5 hours is 11:00!!! There are 60 of them to check in… PLUS, we had quite a snowstorm here today where part of the highway between here and Halifax was closed to traffic, due to the whiteout conditions. That would probably make for a drive longer than 2.5 hours. PANIC!!

As all of my faithful readers are aware, I’ve been through the stress of almost missing an important flight before. Sitting here wondering if the kids made their flight is as nerve-wracking for me as when it happened to me.

There’s no real point to my post, other than I hope the flight waits for them, I hope that the trip is not affected by any possible delay this might cause, and I hope our son is safe.

God speed, my son, and enjoy your trip!

The ONLY True E-Mail Chain Letter

Mar 02 2008

I’ve received many chain letters in my day. I don’t mind people sending them to me as long as they don’t mind that I don’t forward them. There’s not a cell in my body that remotely believes that my luck, fortune, misfortune or anything else for that matter can or will be influenced by how quickly or to how many of my friends I forward an email that requests me to do so.

Whether I’m passing up on a piece of Bill Gates’ fortune by not taking part in his email experiment or I’m not assisting some terminally ill child get into the Guiness Book of Records or I’m not helping some family find their abducted child or refusing to fill in some silly survey about myself or I’m testing fate thus guaranteeing death or dismemberment or simply refuse “make someone’s day” by forwarding a cutesy message to all of my dearest friends with the request that “I’d better get it back”… I’m simply not gonna do it. I simply read the messages for the entertainment or warm fuzzy feelings they provide and delete them.

Until now… THIS E-Mail chain letter is true. It is the only chain letter I’ve read that has passed my scrutiny. Only read on if you dare have your life changed forever. This is the chain letter of all chain letters.

If you don’t forward this post to 17 of your best friends, 4 of your enemies, and 2 people you haven’t heard from in 9 years, fuck all will happen. Oh, and you have 4 minutes and 33 seconds to do so.
