Lard sufferin’ Jeeezus!
I posted about my wife damaging her sciatic nerve last June. Now, I think I’ve gone and done it to myself.
I don’t know how the hell I did it though. We are doing some spring cleaning and some minor renovations. First, I decided I was going to the dump with some junk. I needed to pull the trailer out of the back yard, so I did. The ground was soft and the tire pressure was low, so the pulling was a little tough. Then, I couldn’t find the trailer hitch, so I started loading up the trailer anyway. Then, when I found the trailer hitch, I had to lift the trailer onto the hitch. Heavy, but not too bad. I went to the dump, unloaded a few hundred pounds of junk, and came back. Then I decided to unhook the empty trailer. When I lifted it…. creak, pop. Ouch. Oh well, I’ll shake it off by changing the tires on my van from winter to summer rims. Top that off with a little bit of dragging gyproc in from the shed by myself and there you have it… My psychotic nerve decided to go psycho on me.
So… what did I do wrong?

Going to a chiro to straighten you out?
I usually have to go in every 3 months because of stupid things I have done. Sometimes if I have a minor tweak in my back, I will go in for a quick alignment too.
Back problems suck!

Oh snap!
Well, at least that will distract him from the back pain. Hey! Who wants to come over to my place and move dirt around the back yard

Hmm… the 1st thing you did wrong was decide to do Spring Cleaning. Subsequently every decision after that was an even worse one!

Argh… it got worse. I am going to my doctor today… we’ll see what she says. Thanks Cindy. I needed the reminder.
Dave: I saw the 1/2 hour later blog listed on the Newfoundland Blogroll and added it to my reader for a “trial run”. I thought the name was clever. I had NO IDEA it was your blog until I saw your comment here! Wild.

The doctor can only give you pills for the pain. I would go see a chiropractor. You usually don’t need a referral and it should be covered under your medical. You might need a few trips back, but at least it will straighten you out.

What you did wrong was for the heavy lifting you probably tightened your abs and braced yourself for the lift. With only the easy/moderate lift you were probably thinking “oh this is easy yawwwwwwwnnnn.. hey.. I smell peanuts” in your head and didn’t brace your innards and something gave. Happens in weightlifting all the time that people hurt themselves on the warmup but not on the heavy lift.
That’s what I think, based on a whole whack of assumptions.

Hmmm, my thought is that you made fun of me turning 40, and everytime I did something to injure myself, you based it on the fact that I was 40. Welcome Honey to the ‘Now you are 40 club, so watch the heavy lifting and falls’…

Update: The doctor said I have a sprained muscle. To me that’s good news. Nothing slipped or pinched… just a sprained muscle.
So, in order of correctness, from most correct to least correct is: (drum roll)
1. Pender: something gave. Actually, I smelled burnt toast, not peanuts.
2. Dave Heffernan: spring cleaning. Yes… that was a mistake
3. Rekounas: Chiro? that implies something is out of alignment. The spine is good, just a sprained muscle. I am going for physio first.
4. Donna and Cindy: turning 40? Nope. I asked the doctor and her professional opinion is that it had nothing to do with age. My bad hip does, but the bad back doesn’t.

Burnt toast? Maybe it was the seizure you had that you don’t remember that caused it when you were thrashing around on the ground.

Total stranger here but we have two things in common — both our blogs were near the top of NL Blogroll today (which is why I saw yours) and we both put our backs out recently. It was an exciting new experience for me (mine happened while bending over to pick up a laundry basket off the floor … hardly an unusual strain, but again, could be that all housework is just bad for the body). The pain was excruciating at the time and I had to take a couple of days off work but it turned out, like yours, to be just a pulled muscle, which is SOOO much better than a slipped disc. Two weeks later I can hardly feel a twinge, but I am a lot more careful these days about how I move and what I lift. (I’m 41, by the way, so regardless of what your doctor says there may be something to that turning-40 theory!). Good luck getting better soon.

TrudyJ… total strangers are perfectly welcome. You fit right in, cuz the folks that hang out with me are totally strange.
