So Long, Richard Jeni

Mar 11 2007

CRichard Jeniomedian, Richard Jeni, died today of an apparent suicide. According to CNN.com, he was still alive when they arrived on the scene. He had shot himself in the face. He died later in the hospital.

Richard Jeni was a very funny man. If you have 6 minutes, take the time to watch this video. You will witness first hand his comedic genius. It’s sad to see that disappear.

When I posted this video, it had 15,949 hits on YouTube. There were only 11 videos found using the search term “richard jeni”. My guess is that both of these numbers will expand exponentially over the next few days.

Townie Bastard Melts Down Over Canadian Idol Fever

Mar 09 2007

Townie Bastard is a self proclaimed “arrogant, yet charming” gentlemen from St. John’s, currently living in Iqaluit, Nunavut (That’s directly north of Labrador). I read his blog on a fairly regular basis, entertained enough to continue to subscribe to his RSS feed. He usually goes on about life in the north, politics (yawn), curling, weight loss attempts, etc holding no bars, editing no expletives, and resisting the urge to be brief. On top of all that, he is the father of Anna’s baby. While I am freezing in New Brunswick, his rants and observations of life within the Arctic Circle makes me feel warmer, relatively speaking. Makes me feel better knowing someone else is having a tougher time staying warm.

But I think he finally cracked. His brain froze or something causing some sort of atomic reaction and he suffered a meltdown. Over what? Canadian Idol. icon_smile

Actually, I agree with him. Here’s an excerpt from his blog:

Townie Bastard’s Mascott“I want Newfoundland to be respected more by the rest of Canada. We all do. However, Canadian Idol isn’t the way to do it. I would argue that the more stories that get out about people lining up at pay phones to vote, telecommunication systems being snarled by the volume of voters and people bitching and whining on the websites and Open Line shows about conspiracies to deny Newfoundland it’s God given right to have a Canadian Idol winner, the more fucking ridiculous we sound.

So this is one small way to gain back some respect – ignore Canadian Idol. Completely.”

But you know, these days, we all get rather worked up over the “entertainment” industry. Anna Nicole Smith death and custody battle, Britney’s shaved head, Britney’s other shaved parts, Mel Gibson’s drunken “sugar tits” tyrade, Michael Richards messed up comedy act… all capture our attention and passions. There’s a freakin’ war going on for Christ sake!

At least This Hour Has 22 Minutes has it right:

Can’t wait for spring. I think my brain is freezing too. Besides, Canadian Idol starts in April… just in time for Townie’s brain thaw. Imagine how entertaining his rants will be when his brain cells have the nourishment of a warm flow of blood.

Official Languages Options

Mar 08 2007

What the…?!?

On my way to work this morning, I heard a news story about this guy who got a speeding ticket in northern New Brunswick somewhere. It is important to note that this area is predominantly French speaking. Well this guy gets pulled over and the officer speaks to him in French. The guy gets his ticket, brings it to court, and gets let off because the officer didn’t offer him his choice of service in either official language.

Huh?!? That’s frigged up. The guy is fluent in both languages, but gets away with a speeding ticket because he wasn’t offered service in both? Was he speeding in English?

If the officer couldn’t speak the language the guy spoke, I would almost understand the point. I only speak English, so when someone (a cop, a store clerk, a co-worker, someone on the street) speaks to me in French, I say “eh uh, huh?” and they switch to English. THAT should be the law to abide by, not wasting time with “Pardonnez moi, monsieur, Excuse me sir, voulez vous servicez en francais, or would you like me to parlez in English eh?”

Give me a freakin’ break.

Great, Great Grand Find

Mar 06 2007

I got a super pleasant surprise today. I run a photo gallery as part of my website. I don’t really do a super job in maintaining it, but I have a lot of old photos up there and I have several registered users (in-laws mostly) who upload photos of their own. As a registered user, you can see all the photos, but there are ways to “sneak in the back door”.  Doing a Google search, you can find the pages directly, or you can go directly to a “secure” page if you know the URL or if something else is linking to it.

Back to my post for today… My great, great grand find was a couple of emails I got today. I have a cousin, whom I’ve never met and hardly knew existed, who did a search on her father’s name. With that, she found a picture of her grandparents (my great, great grandparents) on my blog. Isn’t that exciting?

This is the comment she left next to the photo:Walter Rodway and Emily Kirby

I linked to this picture from Google, doing a name search on “Walter Rodway.” This picture is the first one I have ever seen of my grandparents together when they were young. I think that makes you my cousin! (My maiden name was Rodway and both my father and grandfather were Walter.) I’ve been looking at all of your other family pictures too and really enjoying them. I only wish you had names on more of them. I saw a cousin I remember (by her face) that I met her when I was a teenager, but I do not remember her name. I also am enjoying the backgrounds on the Newfoundland pictures, because I have never been there.

The internet really makes the world small, doesn’t it? Wow.

Thank you cousin Donna (not to be confused with wifey Donna) and cousin Jack for reaching out when you found this.  Made my day.
