“you got the climate control in case you got the modder wit ya.”

    I love it!

  2. Jody says:

Why would someone be offended by it? Are other countries with thick accents offended in similar situations? I doubt it.

    That was well done.

  3. Jody says:

My mom said she saw it on TV this morning, in Riverview, NB!

Some people will always been offended. I think it’s a good commerical and a good-natured one. Though it would be much funnier if they had real a Newfoundlander doing in. I got a feeling it was an actor trying to play a Newfoundlander. The real thing is always much better.

  5. Steve says:

What makes it good natured is the other actor’s matter-of-fact lack of reaction to the accent and colloquialisms. There is not a single hint that Newfoundland is being made fun of.

Phillip, if a Newfoundlander did the commercial, the accent would have been played up even more. We really know how to exaggerate the qualities of our own accents. Even more people would be offended! icon_biggrin

    “Newfoundlander”

    Funny.

  7. rekounas says:

They should have hired Billy Gosse to do the salesman. I hear he is looking for a job icon_biggrin

    “Should Newfoundlanders be offended?”

You just lookin’ for sometin to be offended wit der buddy? I don’t see how that would offend anyone, they sound like newfies to me. Besides, the more exposure newfoundland gets as someplace “different”, the better for tourism. I bet a lot of people would go to newfoundland just to hear people talk like that, it’s entertaining.

No, I’m not looking for something to be offended by. I’m not offended; in fact I think it’s hilarious. If you read the comments on the YouTube site, however, there are some folks in there who are quite offended. There’s been debate over the use of the term “Newfie” and the whole Newfoundland thing on both Oh Me Nerves and Steel White Table.

  11. ChrisO says:

i saw it just last night! it was great!

  12. Daniella says:

As a Newfoundlander, I cannot say that I am offended. However, I was left feeling confused. I could barely understand a word this guy was saying.

  13. Lisa says:

The add was HULARIOUS!!! I don’t know who that actor guy was, but he did a pretty good job. Of course the accent is exaggerated… its entertainment value… and worth it, if I may add. As a Newfie, I’m saying to any offended Newfs out there… Get you drars out a knot!!!

  14. rekounas says:

I heard on the radio today an ad that was suppose to be done with a Newfie accent for the Bonavista. Anyhow, the Newfie accent was terrible.

  15. Mimi says:

«If that don’t put a gust in yer spinnaker, I dunno what would.»

OMIGOSH, I love this commercial! When I saw it for the first time here in Halifax, I was FLOORED!

What an honor for Nissan to name a vehicle after a piece of Atlantic Canada. I’ve been trying to memorize it and have gotten a few laughs out of friends, but I just can’t do it justice.

I’m sure no offence was meant by the filming of this commercial. It’s good-natured and fun, just like the Newfoundlanders that I’ve come to know over the years. Take pride in your individuality and what makes you unique. It’s obviously an exageration and there’s no reason to be offended.

  16. Steve says:

Thanks Mimi. That seems to be the consensus. It’s an entertaining commercial with no malicious intent. I don’t believe that we should be offended either.

  17. Steve says:

It took a while, but he mayor of Bonavista has changed her mind on the whole issue. She has decided that there is no such thing as bad publicity, since tourism seems to have increased there over the past year.

  18. Dan says:

I like it more everytime I see it (haven’t seen it on tv here in Illinois but I’ve replayed it about 6 times so far)

    But that’s a Haligonian perspective.

  19. Steve says:

Hey Dan! Welcome aboard. Hope you are enjoying the site. It’s a great way to keep in touch.
