Unique Christmas Gift

Dec 20 2006

What do you get for night_time_just_got_a_little_brighter.jpgthe person who already has everything? Something he or she doesn’t already have… duh!

Here’s a great idea: Slippers with headlights!

Brightfeet™ Lighted Slippers are nightlights for your feet. They are ideal for night time trips to the bathroom, kitchen, kid’s room or anywhere in your house! Power outage? Use Brightfeet™ to locate candles, flashlights and other emergency lighting sources.

Santa? Can I have a pair?  Please?

Fighting for Freedom? What freedom?

Dec 18 2006

When I read this story on CBC News, I knew it would end up as a CBC “Your View” feature.

A QMJHL hockey player, Dave Bouchard, playing for the Saint John Seadogs was released from his hockey team because he didn’t put his signature on a Canadian flag destined for Afghanistan as as expression of support to our troops. What a load of crap!

I don’t know that I support the war, or the cause, really. I mean, how could you totally support a war that was started based on lies and misinformation. But that’s another story. Regardless of the cause, we should all support the troops we send. Outward expression of support for the troops is not necessarily an expression of of support for the war itself. The opposite is true. Expressions against the war and whether or not we should be there does NOT mean one doesn’t support the troops themselves and pray for their safe return.

Check out the “Your View” link above. There are some interesting responses… pretty consistently against the coach’s actions of dismissing the young man in question.

Gone Phishing…AGAIN!

Dec 18 2006

Man! I got hit with another attempt. This time it was attempting to get my Paypal information. PayPal is a web service that allows you to securely execute financial transactions online. PayPal acts as a go-between between you and a vendor so you don’t need to share your credit card information with everyone and his dog… just PayPal.

This time the phishing attempt came in the form of an email confirming my order of a Dell computer. Well, I didn’t buy a Dell computer and the phishermen were counting on that. For my “convenience” they provided a “cancel order” link in the email which brought me to this page:

paypal-phish.jpg
Note the url I’ve circled. All the other links in the email pointed to apparently legitimate PayPal sites. The “cancel order” link brought me here, requesting me to enter my credentials. This is NOT a PayPal link.

Be very, very careful. There’s plenty of phishers in the sea. Don’t get hooked.

Phishin’ for a Newphie

Dec 17 2006

I got phished! Well, almost. But someone did attempt to hook me.

Phishing, for those of you who don’t know, is an attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive personal information by pretending to be a trustworthy person or business contact. Phishing can be done via email, text messaging or even by phone. Basically, it’s a scam attempt to gain access to your personal credentials in order to cheat you out of your money.

I got an email yesterday that looked like this:

phishing.JPG
In the example shown above, the website that the link brought me to was VERY authentic looking. It was looking for me to enter my web banking information… my bank card and password. I can see how the unsuspecting might be fooled into actually entering the information.

I contacted my bank, and the phishing link now no longer works.

Remember this. Your bank will NEVER send you an email requesting you to sign in. It will NEVER call you and ask you for your credit card number. It will NEVER ask you to provide your PIN, password, Social Insurance Number, or any other personal information in a communication NOT initiated by you. And if it does, refuse to do so. The balance in your bank account will thank you.
