I was talking with a friend this evening, and she told me that she was always thought that the word Newfie was a derogatory term, loosely meaning “stupid”. Yet, many people from Newfoundland call themselves Newfie and are proud to do so. I am one of those.
Here’s a funny story.
Several years ago, I was one of several Newfies working in Fredericton on a large government project. We all proudly declared ourselves Newfies. One day, a lady from Quebec who worked with us mustered enough courage to question me as to why I called myself a Newfie. She was even more confused when I said I was proud of it. I further explained to her that is simply means I’m from Newfoundland. Then the light bulb turned on. She had never associated the two. She told me that growing up, her mother always used the term to mean “stupid”. If she stubbed her toe or bumped her head on something, her mother would say “you are such a newfie!”.
People are such Newfies!

These are excellent sources for billiards advice. These are a couple of the few sites I have been able to find that does not actually exist for the sole purpose of selling you something.
Don’t know how it happened, but Rex made it through to the final two on Canadian Idol 2005. I’m from Newfoundland and I’m rooting for him, but he is clearly the lesser talent of the group. I know it doesn’t really sound like I mean it, but GO REX! (Melissa’s gonna win though!)
I read this book last week. FISH! Philosophy. Our HR department is running the program to help raise morale at the office. Well, after the first chapter I was ready to jump off a bridge. The subject of the book and her husband quit their jobs and moved with their two young children to start a new life in another city. This couple is described as total best friends, into and about each other. Then one day the husband gets sick, dies, and leaves her alone to raise the kids and pay off huge medical bills. All in the first chapter!
I went to the SPCA and watched them put puppies down, just to cheer up.
The Stones were in town this past weekend. 85,000 screaming fans.
I didn’t go, but I heard it was a hoot.
